The Three Sisters is a name given to three buildings on a hill at Fort Barry, California; a decommissioned United States Military campus in Northern California on the Pacific coast. These large-scale photographs, taken in one of the three buildings, were constructed after research and reflection on the capacity of the state’s military to decide the value of human life; that it may continue, that it may not continue, or that it be subjected to an occupied presence living instead as do the walking dead. With the architectural and ideological material still embedded within the hillside, how might one respond to these specters which envelop like the marine fog layer surfacing where the Three Sisters stand? Under what conditions might one decide to seek elsewhere an opportunity to live and not simply survive when these forces extend into territories of encroachment beyond the state? These photographs are part of an ongoing body of work.
