Solo Exhibition, University of San Francisco Manresa Gallery, San Francisco, California, September 9th - November 12th, 2017
Above are selected works from my solo exhibition, Making Out Who’s Seeing You, which was installed in the University of San Francisco’s Manresa Gallery. Manresa Gallery is an exhibition space comprised of four large alcoves inside of St. Ignatius church. The alcoves are located along the eastern side of the structure.
Requesting access to the sacristy of St. Ignatius church for two months before the exhibition, my research included extended daytime visits, several days a week, within an area of the church for which the majority of parishioners were not given routine access.
In the St. Ignatius sacristy, I came across sacred objects, several pianos, carpets in various stages of wear, extensive natural light sourced from apertures in the ceilings, open stairwells, robes, music stands, locked doors, as well as cleaning supplies, ladders, and storage for maintenance staff. Working with these materials, I made photographs in the sacristy which were printed or combined with glass and Dibond. Each work was installed in different alcove positions according to the research in acoustics I conducted within each alcove. A principal goal for the installed exhibition was to provide viewers a reoriented access to the sacristy, an architecturally designated component of the church’s experience separate from parishioner worship, by presenting works which were made in the sacristy and then brought out to an area of the church accessible to the public.
